She is a Michelin star destroyer.
A travel influencer has slammed a world-famous restaurant in Spain’s Basque Country for serving her the “worst meal” of her life – after dropping nearly $1,000 on a dinner said to be as revolting as a restaurant neighbor refused to pay.
Chloe Jade Meltzer dismissed the zero-star review in a series of videos – grabbing 8 million views on TikTok.
“I really can’t believe how bad this restaurant was,” Meltzer lamented in one of the posts.
The object of the globetrotter’s ire was Mugaritz, a two-Michelin-star establishment in San Sebastian, Spain, which regularly appears on lists of the world’s best restaurants.
Andoni Luis Aduriz, head chef at Mugaritz, is known for his culinary creativity – which seems to have gone unappreciated by at least one table on a recent visit.
“For approximately three hours, and through about 23-25 creations, together we will try to weave a tale of stories, gestures and emotions,” the restaurant’s website promises potential diners.
“Smells, textures and smells you can taste and feel using your hands to stimulate all the senses and evoke our most primal habits,” the voiceover continues.
Meltzer said she was initially intrigued by the “inventive” setup, recalling how she chose her wine by choosing a photo and telling servers “three things about yourself” — like the Charades cabernet.
Unfortunately, the meal seemed to go downhill almost immediately upon the arrival of the first course, a jelly-like fish pit that patrons had to eat with their hands.
“I was basically eating lip gloss,” Meltzer complained, as she licked the goo off her fingers like an aardvark.
Other lowlights included a “seafood fry” that the well-traveled eater likened to a “wet cigar” and a “block”-shaped mold made of kefir and olive oil from which diners are “supposed to inhale juice from strange” – as an interactive film prosthesis.
Other alleged concoctions included “burnt spinach with BBQ sauce,” a fermented potato skin with “disgusting BBQ sauce” — a combination the influencer likened to a “makeup wipe” — as well as some “old bucatini ” and a “churro”. ” which was actually unripe plantain, clearly the culinary equivalent of catfish fishing.
The total price for this sinister-looking meal? 897 Euros (about $975) for the Meltzer party.
“I really don’t understand how this restaurant is in business,” the content creator fumed. “It’s the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to in my life.”
And while Meltzer, an avowed pescatarian who admits to eschewing at least one meat dish during her sober elimination, noted that Mugaritz gives customers a disclaimer at the outset, warning them that they won’t “like to all the dishes”.
Still, she said, it didn’t make sense that everything was “absolutely disgusting.”
TikTokker wasn’t the only reviewer who thought the restaurant was the emperor’s new clothes. She claimed one customer was “so fed up with the BS” that she refused to pay the bill until the police were called, as seen in her second video.
The TikTok comment was confused by Meltzer’s tweet with a caption “I’m so obsessed with bad reviews of Michelin-starred restaurants.”
Another wrote, “This is why I don’t go to Michelin star restaurants without extensive research and reviews. I don’t mind paying the price, but not for pretentious garbage.”
Many compared the experience to the 2022 food thriller The Menu, in which unsuspecting patrons are invited into a sadistic social experiment in the guise of an avant-garde tasting menu.
Mugaritz currently holds an average rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 on Tripadvisor, however reviews from recent months are extremely negative.
One reviewer called the experience “terrible from start to finish.”
“At the end of the day, no matter how smart you think you are as a chef — the food has to taste good, and in reality the food is a disaster,” Meltzer said. “Of the 22 dishes served there was not a single dish I would want to eat again.”
“You’re experimenting, you’re supporting local produce, you’re being seasonal, you’re challenging guests to a new experience — but somewhere along that journey it has to taste good,” she said.
